With the nation's economy in a downward spiral over the last few years, many salary budgets have remained in a deep freeze. With the economic picture continuing to show modest signs of improvement, salaries are projected to slowly thaw and trend upward in 2012.

According to a recent survey by the American Society of Employers (ASE), businesses are expecting further gains in the overall economy. With improved cash flow and greater employee productivity, companies are now looking at loosening up their salary budgets in an effort to reward top performers and retain critical talent moving forward. According to the ASE, for the first time since 2008-09 merit increases are at or slightly above 3 percent among the businesses that budgeted increases.  Read more...

NLRBNational Labor Relations Board (NLRB)
Delays Date of Employee Rights Notice Posting Until 2012

 

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is an independent federal agency whose responsibility it is to protect employees' right to organize and to determine whether to have unions as their bargaining representatives. As of Jan. 31, 2012, all private-sector employers who are under the jurisdiction of the NLRB will be required to post a notice, advising employees of their rights under the National Labor Relations Act. This notice was originally required for posting in November 2011, but has been postponed.

 

This requirement came about after much discussion at the NLRB. Up until this point, the Board indicated that they believed that many employees protected under the NLRA were unaware of their rights under the statute. The intended effects of this action are to increase the knowledge of the NLRA among employees and to better enable the exercise of these rights by employees under the statute. Read more...

PA ACT 32 Breakfast Seminar a Success

 

More than 100 attendees came, learned and left the Ambler Theater on September 22nd, better prepared to conquer the big changes coming to the Local Earned Income Tax collection process, better known as Pennsylvania ACT 32, effective, January 1, 2012.  

Representatives from local employers heard from a diverse group of speakers about what they will need to do to become compliant with this new law in order to avoid penalties and interest.

Featured speakers included PROXUS Principals Chris Cumo

and John Israel; and Elko & Associates Payroll Supervisor Debra Kern, CPA, who provided a working understanding of PA ACT 32.  An open-forum question-and-answer session followed, featuring a panel of experts, including Berkheimer and Associates District Manager, Mike Santangelo; PROXUS Director of Tax, Karen Andrews; and Jim Newhard, Principal, James J. Newhard, CPA; Also, David A. Caplan, CPA, one of the architects of PA ACT 32 and a member of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) was on hand to field questions from the audience.  

 

"Thank you for keeping me in the loop on seminar offerings PROXUS, Beneficial and Elko are co-presenting," said CMC Energy Services accounting manager Angelica Biehl. "[The] presentation on PA ACT 32 was so helpful, and it is the first notice I'd gotten on this topic to date, from anywhere."

 

"It was very informative, and somewhat eased the jitters of some new government regulations," Holz and Henry's Geri Silknitter said.
